Join us for a scenic and invigorating autumn walk through the stunning fringes of Dartmoor. Our journey begins in the charming village of Drewsteignton, from where we'll head into the peaceful woods near Drewsteignton. As we descend toward Fingle Bridge, the tranquil River Teign will guide us along its winding path through the picturesque Teign Gorge, offering some beautiful views and the soothing sounds of nature.
Our walk will ascend leading us to the magnificent Castle Drogo, a National Trust property and the last castle ever built in England. Here, we'll take an extended lunch break, giving you the opportunity to explore this architectural gem or relax at the café, enjoying breathtaking views over the Dartmoor countryside. Castle Drogo, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for the self-made millionaire Julius Drewe, has recently undergone a £15 million restoration. Perched high above the gorge, this granite masterpiece provides fascinating insights into early 20th-century life and offers stunning panoramas weather permitting across the surrounding landscape.
For non National Trust Members the entrance fee to Castle Drogo is £15.00 per adult
After lunch around mid afternoon, we’ll continue our walk across the open expanses of Piddledown Common, before looping back to our starting point in Drewsteignton joining onto the Hunters Path. This is a relatively easy walk, with some inclines and much of the route shaded by serene woodland. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to breathe in the crisp autumn air, listen to the gentle flow of the river, for a day filled with rich history, beautiful landscapes, and great company.
DOGS: Well-behaved, quiet dogs are very welcome to join us on this walk, as long as they remain under control while we navigate woodlands, tracks, and quiet lanes.
Note this walk will incorporate a visit to Castle Drogo, so please follow the National Trust's guidelines regarding dogs. Dogs are welcome on a short lead within the castle grounds, including the formal gardens, shop, and reception area, though not the castle itself. Dogs are also allowed in the outdoor seating areas of the café— and dog blankets are available just ask the NT staff for one.
If, at any point, your dog becomes disruptive or causes distress to other animals or livestock, the walk leader, with the support of the Outdoor Lads board of trustees, reserves the right to ask you to leave the event. Uncontrolled or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.
Kindly adhere to the Countryside Code at all times, ensuring that your dog is under effective control. (Keeping Dogs Under Effective Control)

What to bring
The route is on well trodden trails and uneven pathways, could be a little muddy in places if wet. There are a couple of inclines on this route. So sturdy footwear would be preferable for this walk - please do consider the weather though.
Check the forecast and bring clothing to suit the conditions. This walk won’t go ahead if the forecast is particularly wet.
Food & drink
If time allows, we’ll stop for a quick break at Fingle Bridge, where you can grab a coffee. We expect to arrive at Castle Drogo by lunchtime. You’ll have the option to buy lunch at the well-stocked cafeteria/restaurant on site, or if you’ve packed your own, there are picnic tables available for your use. Feel free to bring snacks or your own lunch, and don’t forget to bring plenty of water for the trip!
