This is an Easter Saturday country ramble across the rural scenery of West Sussex intersperesed by patches of woodland, rolling hills, farmsteads, pretty cottages and distant views. We will pass under the spectacular Ouse Valley Viaduct whic carries the Brighton main railway line 96 feet (29 m) high on 37 semi-circular brick arches. It opened in July 1841 and some 11 million Dutch bricks used in its construction were shipped up the river below from the port of Newhaven. 2/3 the way around we will pass the village of Staplefield having two lovely country pubs for a drink.
The route is almost constantly undulating and follows the Ouse Valley way and High Weald landscape trails - 2 lond distance paths for some of the day. You won't see any urban bits once we have left Balcombe, and you really will be 'deep in the weald'

Food & drink
Please bring a packed lunch and something to drink with you. There won't be time to eat at the pub, but we will stop for a while to refresh.
