Challenge yourself to this 70 mile cycle to the Clyde coast and back!
Starting in Johnstone we will head out along the Sustrans route 75 cycle path towards Kilmacolm and Greenock before reaching the 'Tail of the Bank' which marks the start of the Clyde estuary. We'll then follow the coast south past Inverkip marina towards Largs for a lunch stop either on the beach if the weather is fine or in Nardinis cafe. Our return route will take us further down the coast through Fairlie, West Kilbride and Saltcoats before heading back inland to join the Sustrans route 7 cycle path back to Johnstone via Kilwinning, Kilbirnie and Lochwinnoch.
The total distance is almost exactly 70 miles, but don't let this put you off as much of the route is flat or gently graded with a maximum climb of around 140m and manageable with a reasonable level of fitness and stamina. Also there are various points where you can opt out of the ride and catch a train back should you find it too much of a challenge.
Most of the ride is on cycle paths or quiet roads with just a few short sections of busy road.
A map of the proposed route is available at: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29165805
