Chippy & The Rollright Stones

Come and visit the nice market town of Chipping Norton affectionately known as "Chippy" to the locals, before leaving to walk to Oxfordshire's answer to Stonehenge - The Rollright Stones.
The Rollright Stones consists of three monuments - a stone circle, an ancient tomb and a single standing stone. Local legend states that a king and his army were turned to stone by a local witch. These also gave inspiration to Tolkien, for his giants turning to stone in The Hobbit (supposedly)...
In addition we will walk through a couple of nice villages - quaint Salford (not the Manchester one) and the Little Rollright. This area is surprisingly hilly so provided the weather is good, we should get some good views.
Finally we will loop back towards Chippy which as a town has a number of great pubs, cafes and Cotswolds style shops. Chippy is a known haunt of a few celebrities, but no promises for the day.
Please note the Rollright Stones are managed by The Rollright Stones Trust, which ask for a £1 fee. This can be paid by phone or coins.

Spring and Summer walks mean lots of new and existing members excited to be getting out more. Please only book if you know you can make it. If your plans change please free up the space for someone else.
Is it dog friendly?
Dogs are welcome but please note and abide by the Countryside Code (https://tinyurl.com/rlqvp3h) and be prepared for a couple of stiles / hills on the walk and fields with sheep & lambs. Please also remember not everyone loves dogs as much as you do so please be mindful of other members.

You MUST complete a Participation Statement, in addition to booking your event space before attending an OutdoorLads event. You only need to complete this Participation Statement once, not for each event you attend.






What to bring
Note that the kit list below is only a broad general guide and you will need to consider the weather forecast and specific conditions when deciding what to wear closer to the time.
Hand sanitiser and a face covering: whilst we are living with Covid-19, please bring your own to events to help keep everyone safe
Water: bring at least two litres
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Day rucksack: typically 20-30 litres, they are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely
Boots: waterproof and breathable and designed for hiking, trainers are OK if the ground is dry and there’s little chance of rain (probably not given the time of year)
Gaiters: recommended for wet weather or boggy conditions
Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters
Layered clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece)
Trousers: ideally no jeans as they become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry and on warm days shorts are OK (again probably not in Winter!)
Waterproof jacket: essential when hiking in all but the calmest of weather, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry
Gloves: Windproof, or better still, waterproof gloves are the best choice, bring a spare pair if expecting rain
Hat or cap: stay warm in winter and shaded in summer
Sunglasses: for any sunny day, even in winter
Sun cream: can be useful even on cloudy and winter days
Snacks: bring biscuits, energy bars, gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit for example and put them somewhere easy to get hold of
Lunch: bring a packed lunch unless otherwise stated
Food & drink
Please bring food and drink, but there are shops in the local area if needed on the day.
