Join Ian on this spectacular autumn walk in the Goyt Valley as the leaves change from rich greens to glorious golds.
The Goyt Valley is a wonderfully magical place, lying just a few miles northwest of Buxton in the heart of The Peak District National Park. People have enjoyed visiting the valley since Victorian times. Strolling along the banks of the small stream which will become the River Goyt as it meanders over limestone rocks and through picturesque woodland.
The construction of two large reservoirs – Fernilee in 1937 and Errwood in 1968 – completely changed the landscape, destroying a way of life that had been here for centuries. But the area remains a wonderfully quiet and scenic place to visit.
Today’s visitors to the Goyt Valley enjoy the wonderfully tranquil and picturesque scenery. But it wasn’t always this way. In times gone by the valley rang to the harsh sounds of stone being quarried, coal being mined, steam trains being hauled up and down steep inclines, and even a large gunpowder mill.
