Shere & the North Downs Way

Blow out the Christmas cobwebs with a mid-week (Wednesday) scenic 11 mile circular walk amongst the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) which provides some of the best walking in southern England.
We start at Gomshall before crossing fields to the picturesque village of Shere which was the set location for the 2006 film "The Holiday" with Jude law and Cameron Diaz.
After taking in the 15th and 16th century timber framed buildings and church where the anchoress Christine Carpenter was enclosed in a cell in the 14th century, we have a relatively strenuous uphill climb which will be rewarded once we reach the famous beauty spot of Newlands Corner.
We continue on to Sherbourne Pond and the nearby Silent Pool which have been popular places with tourists since the Victorian era. We finish back in Gomshall.
If you have OS maps the route is at Shere and North Downs Way (osmaps.com)

What to bring
Water: bring at least two litres
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Day rucksack: typically 20-30 litres, they are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely
Boots: waterproof and breathable and designed for hiking, trainers are OK if the ground is dry and there’s little chance of rain
Gaiters: recommended for wet weather or boggy conditions
Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters
Layered clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece)
Trousers: ideally no jeans as they become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry and on warm days shorts are OK
Waterproof jacket: essential when hiking in all but the calmest of weather, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry
Gloves: Windproof, or better still, waterproof gloves are the best choice, bring a spare pair if expecting rain
Hat or cap: stay warm in winter and shaded in summer
Sunglasses: for any sunny day, even in winter
Sun cream: can be useful even on cloudy and winter days
Snacks: bring biscuits, energy bars, gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit for example and put them somewhere easy to get hold of
Lunch: bring a packed lunch unless otherwise stated
Food & drink
I have made a reservation for lunch at the Plucky Pheasant Cafe at Newlands Corner - we shall be in their large covered heated marquee which is dog friendly. The manager has already advised they will be busy on the day of our visit and so there could be a wait on food. It may therefore be quicker if we order a light lunch such as soup, sandwich, toasted panini etc. The Plucky Pheasant Café – THE PLUCKY PHEASANT Cafe/Restaurant in Surrey
Alternatively, you can bring your own picnic lunch to have at Newlands Corner, or the Newlands Cafe serves hot dogs, burgers, sandwiches etc. although there is no covered seating (it's effectively like a food van).
