On this charming urban walk you will see expansive parkland, peaceful canal paths and grand mansions and perhaps some roaming deer. In fact you will mostly forget how close to the city of Nottingham you actually are.
Nottingham has a rich, vibrant history and culture. We'll be starting our walk with Robin Hood just south of the gates to Nottingham Castle, where a castle has been on the site in one form or other since 1067.
Our walk will take us along some of the cities canalways and into an ancient deer park, here we'll see Wollaton Hall, used in the filming of Batman Begins and where we'll grab lunch.
Unfortunately, this is not a dog-friendly walk.
Gay History and Legend
One of the gayest kings around was the big and butch Edward II. He stayed at various residences across Nottinghamshire many times. He even made his equally big and butch boyfriend Piers Gaveston the Constable of Nottingham Castle and Justice of Sherwood Forest.
A chronicler of Edward II wrote "upon looking at him [Gaveston] the son of the king immediately felt such love for him that he entered into a covenant of constancy, and bound himself with him before all other mortals with a bond of indissoluble love, firmly drawn up and fastened with a knot"

What to bring
I always prefer comfortable hiking boots, but you might get away with a pair of good trainers on this walk. The terrain can be muddy along this route, so at least wear footwear that provides enough grip.
Of course, dress for the weather, layers is better (fleece and separate waterproof overcoat) and will allow you to more easily regulate your temperature. If we get lucky with the weather please ensure you pack your sunglasses and sunscreen, it might also be the perfect opportunity to show us your legs.
Food & drink
Bring water or a flask of tea to stay hydrated, some snacks [I like Liquorice Allsorts ;-)] and a rucksack to carry them in.
Bring a packed lunch if you like, there may be an opportunity to get something to eat at the Wollaton Courtyard Cafe, or the Admiral Rodney in Wollaton Village.
