Join David and Alex for varied circular route through the Woburn Estate and surrounding countryside. We’ll start from the main car park opposite St Mary’s Church and head out through the Deer Park, skirting lakes and woodland and keeping an eye out for black squirrels and deer along the way.
We’ll follow a mix of public footpaths, estate tracks and quiet lanes, including sections alongside the safari park fences - so there’s a good chance of seeing wildlife, even if the lions stay put. The route leaves the Woburn Estate and takes us through villages like Eversholt and Milton Bryan, where there’s an optional pub stop near the halfway point.
Later on we’ll pass some interesting historical spots, including a former WWII propaganda site built in 1942 as a studio for the Political Warfare Executive, and Paris House (which a previous Duke of Bedford brought back from the Paris Exhibition of 1878), before looping back through the estate past ponds and open grassland to finish where we started.
It’s mostly gentle walking with a few steady rises, nothing technical, and we’ll keep a relaxed pace with stops as needed. A short section may involve paddle along a stream, which can be avoided if not everyone is wearing waterproof footwear!
There are warning signs in the Woburn estate as the large number of deer means there may be ticks present, so please be aware. The grass us usually grazed short so usually only a problem if picnicking!
Don't waste that space!
Summer means lots of members looking to get out more so please only book if you know you can make it. If your plans change please free up the space for someone else.

Is it dog friendly?
The walk is not suitable for dogs as it crosses a deer park and the edge of a safari park.

What to bring
Water: bring at least two litres.
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Day rucksack: typically 20-30 litres, they are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely
Boots: waterproof and breathable and designed for hiking, trainers are OK if the ground is dry and there’s little chance of rain.
Gaiters: recommended for wet weather or boggy conditions.
Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters.
Layered clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece).
Trousers: jeans are not ideal as they become heavy and cold in the rain. Breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry and shorts are convenient for warm days.
Waterproof jacket: essential when hiking in all but the calmest of weather. Breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry.
Hat or cap: stay warm in winter and shaded in summer.
Food & drink
We will stop for lunch so please bring a packed lunch. Woburn has a number of pubs and a small shop where you can buy snacks or a drink before and after the walk.
