This hike is about 11km (7 miles) with approximately 300m of ascent. Most of the ascent is gradual, with only a few short steep sections. As the weather may be wet, paths and trails may be very muddy.

Postponed from 17th Dec 2022

Join Ant and the Outdoor Lads for a hike connecting two of Greater Manchester's best country parks.

The walk will start by the Cafe at Etherow Country Park, from there we'll head past the village of Compstall before moving onto some public footpaths that'll take us up to Werneth Low Country Park. On the way, we can call into a pub for refreshments. After our pub stop, we'll use the Tameside trail and some other footpaths to make our way back to Etherow, where we will finish the hike with a walk through the park's forest and wetlands.

Points of interest on the route:

The Hare & Hounds Inn: The pub we'll visit on the way to Werneth Low, where we'll get some of the best possible views of Manchester.

Werneth Low Country Park: Established in 1980, the park gives great views of both Manchester and The Peak District, depending on which side of the park we're on. Located within the park is the Hyde war memorial, which was erected in 1921 to honour the local soldiers who died in the first world war.

Etherow Country Park: Opened in 1968, it is one of the oldest country parks in England, and is a mix of woodland and wetland. Located within the park is the impressive weir on The River Etherow and The Compstall Nature Reserve. The reserve is an SSSI that is home to over 200 plant species and 100 bird species, including several endangered species.

Dogs are welcome, though will need to be on leads if we go through any fields with livestock. There are also several stiles that dogs may need lifting over.

Once finished, we can go to the nearby pub.

Message the event leader if you've any questions.
