Now's the time to be booking your winter holiday, and for 2020, OutdoorLads has teamed up with Undiscovered Mountains to bring you a mountain adventure you will not forget! We will be exploring the Southern French Alps on this fantastic FOUR NIGHT break, with three full days of winter activities all included.

Discover the pristine winter wildernesses of the snowy Southern French Alps on snowshoes, and choose from a range of other winter activities to add an extra adventure to your weekend. (Not sure what snowshoeing is? It's a form of hiking, with specialist footwear that displaces weight over a larger area, deterring snow accumulation and allowing great maneuverability. It's the original snow sport and is great fun, and easy to master - if you can hike, you can snowshoe!)

For the snowshoeing days, our guides will take you off the beaten track to snowshoe up to a mountain col or summit, through snowy alpine plateau, along frozen streams and waterfalls and beautiful snow laden Alpine forests.

Expect to see mythical Alpine wildlife like chamois and ibex as well as foxes, deer and many birds amongst the stunning mountain scenery. You may even come across wolf tracks on your travels!

You also have a choice day, for which you have 3 activity points that you can exchange for a range of activities from skiing to paragliding to husky sledding.

You don't need any previous experience to enjoy snowshoeing or the other winter activities but a reasonable level of fitness is recommended as you will be walking in the mountains for two full days. Regular hill walkers, runners and gym goers will love this trip!

The guides we use for the snowshoeing are fully qualified UIAGM high mountain guides which is the highest qualification in the mountains. These are the guys who can take you up the north face of the Eiger. Whilst you won't be doing anything that extreme, the knowledge and experience of a high mountain guide means he has the flexibility and competence to take you wherever is safe. Other qualifications for snowshoeing are limited to the wide valley bottoms and pisted routes in Nordic areas.

Our guides are also wildlife experts and local to the area so you'll get their precious expert local knowledge and insight into the local wildlife to make your holiday truly memorable!

What's included?

  • 4 nights half board (evening meal and breakfast) accommodation in the Catrems Hotel staying in twin rooms (2 people to a room)
  • 2 days guided snowshoeing
  • 3 activity points that you can exchange for a range of activities on your free adventure day
  • Return transfers from Marseille airport to accommodation
  • Transport to and from all scheduled activities.

The cost of this package is €900, which is payable directly to undiscovered Mountains. Full details are available on the Undiscovered Mountains website.

ITINERY

A fabulous winter activity break in the Alps with two days snowshoeing in the wild and pristine winter wildernesses and a choice of  activities such as ice climbing, igloo building and husky sledding for your free day.

For the snowshoeing days, these are just examples of the sorts of snowshoe walks we will do. The reality is that we will make a choice based on the conditions when you are here so that we make the most of the best snow and scenery!

For your activities, you have 3 activity points included with your package which you can exchange for a wide range of activities which we will organise for you on your free day.

Day 1:  Arrival

We'll collect you from Marseille airport at 14h to take you up to your accommodation in the Alps in time for an aperitif and dinner!

Please make sure you arrange your flights to coincide with this time. We are able to accommodate flight delays of up to 1 hour (leaving Marseille airport at 15h). If you require a transfer after 15h or at a different time of day, this will be an additional charge.

We are recommending people book onto the Ryan air flights from London Stanstead to Marseille which arrive on the Wednesday morning at 9h55. There is also a flight with British airways from London Heathrow that arrives at 10h30. If everyone manages to book onto these flights we will bring our transfer time forward so there is less waiting.

Day 2:  Arrival and First Day Snowshoeing

Summit Of Palastre 2278m - Full day snowshoe with picnic on the col (4 - 7 hrs)

This is a beautiful and very rewarding day out up to the summit. There is a gradual ascent through open snow fields with a waterfall (usually iced up)  and rocky outcrops with spectacular views over the Champsaur valley - about 720m of ascent in total.

After reaching the col for a well deserved picnic lunch in the sun, you head up to the summit for that real top of the world feeling! Then it is all down hill and on snow shoes you can slide, run, jump and generally have lots of fun getting down the mountain - the snow is very forgiving! A really good day out in the mountains!!

Day 3 Activity and Adventure Day

This is your day to try something new, get your adrenalin fix or just relax. It is entirely up to you.

You have 3 activity points included with your holiday that you can exchange for a range of activities and adventures. You can choose from ice climbing, husky sledding, paragliding, snake sledge, downhill skiing, cross country skiing, giant tyrolean and more! You just give us your choices when you book and we'll get them booked in and organised for you.

If you have chosen a short activity like the zip line or one that takes place at the end of the day like the snake sled, there are plenty of other things to see and do. You can go for a self guided snowshoe walk following a way marked route, go to the leisure centre and swim with a view in the glass walled swimming pool or browse around the resort shops. The choice is yours!

If you want extra activity points to pack in lots of adventures you can buy extra points at any time.

Please note that some activities do require a minimum number of people to run. If your activity choices are short of people we can either create a group with other clients here the same weekend as you or you can pay a supplement to cover the extra cost.

Day 4 Snowshoeing Day

Summit of the Piolit 2484m - Full day snowshoeing with picnic on the col (6-7hours)

This is a big but very rewarding day out up to the summit of La Piolit at 2484m. This snow shoe walk starts off following the beautiful Rouanne valley from Ancelle before zig zagging through mixed forest with a view of a dramatic cliff face (Le Lauterat) across the valley.

As the woods start to thin you walk out on to open snow fields with magnificent Alpine views all around you. There are different routes to get to the summit, but the most popular is to go up to the col de la Pourachiere at 2173m. As well as being a great picnic spot, this is also a good opt out point if anyone doesn't fancy going up to the top.

You can sit and wait in the sunshine and enjoy the amazing views right over the Gapencais and Champsaur valleys. Those who get to the summit will also see the Lac du Serre Poncon (biggest dammed lake in Europe) in all its winer glory! Then it is more snowshoe fun downhill back to the valley!

Day 5 Return Home

This is the sad day we say goodbye but hopefully it will be more of an a bientôt!

We'll take you back to Marseille airport for 11am today. Please make sure you arrange your flights to coincide with this time.

There are flights from Marseille to London Stanstead with Ryan air leaving at 14h45 and with British Airways to London Heathrow leaving at 18h. Again if everyone books later flights we will be able to leave a little later in the morning!
