Wharfedale Mountain Biking day out.
6 people attending
4 places left
Starting from Skipton Station we will be biking on canal, country lane, various bridle ways and quiet little roads through the great scenery on Wharfedale before returning to Skipton for a pint.
Leaving the train station we will follow the canal pathway to Gargrave where we will take the Malham road towards Hetton. From Hetton we head off on a bridleway to Bordsley Moor and if unridable (due to mud) we may need to push for 10-15 minutes before hitting a road then decending into the remote hamlet of Bordsley. From Bordsley we climb up over the hill to decend into Threshfield. Then taking the quietish country lane to Burnstall where there will be a cafe stop. After refuelling we will be following the river Wharfe down the valley past the historic Bolton Abbey before returning via the back roads to Skipton for a pint.
There are a number of hills and descends so a reasonable level of fitness will be required. Front suspension on your bike is a must.
A good day out that will leave you pleasantly tired and me knackered :)
What to bring
Bike: Mountain bike at least with front suspension as the canal path and moor stretch is very bumpy
Helmet: OutdoorLads requires you to wear one
Clothing: lightweight and layered, shorts are great even in rain as they allow free movement of your legs. Avoid jeans, which are uncomfortable when wet, and baggy tracksuit bottoms, which can snag in the chain. Colourful and/or reflective clothing will make you more visible to other road users
Footwear: grippy soles if your bike has standard pedals
Gloves: cycle gloves help avoid blisters
Punctures: spare inner tube, bike tyre pump and tyre levers
Tools: any special tools that your bike needs
Small snacks: such as chocolate or energy bars
Plenty of water: in bottle/s on your bike or in a daysack/bladder
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Eye protection: avoid getting grit or insects in your eyes, sunglasses are OK if they are not made of glass and not too shaded
Sun cream: take care, even on overcast days
Bike lights: be seen and safe
Storage: small day-sack or a bag on your bike
Mobile Phone: keep it in a waterproof bag for use in emergencies
Food & drink
Please bring enough food and drink with you as there are limited opportunities to buy food and drink en-route.
If the cafe at Burnsall is open we might be able to grab tea and cakes etc.
