Join us for a day out Outdoor Sports Climbing at Horseshoe Quarry!!
Unlike in Traditional (Trad) climbing, the routes for Sports Climbing already have bolted protection fixed to the rock. Once you've clipped in a Quick Draw, you clip your rope in the same way that you would on a lead climb at an indoor wall. This makes it an ideal way to transition to climbing outdoors from indoors.
And Horseshoe Quarry is an ideal venue for your introduction to Outdoor Sport Climbing, with over 300 routes over 12 walls, ranging in height from 6 to 35m, with Sports Grades ranging from 3+ to 7b (but be warned these grades are a little harder than on an indoor wall!!).
This event is aimed at climbers who can climb competently on lead indoors (or out!!), although we will try to cater for less experienced climbers too depending on the availability of leaders and the experience of other climbers - if this is you, please contact the leader before signing up.

Participation statement
As a BMC Affiliate member, Outdoorlads draws your attention to the fact that climbing is an activity with a danger of personal injury or death. You should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for your own actions and involvement.
Please note that every person participating should be aware of (and accept) that those members perceived as ‘in charge’ or leading the event are not necessarily qualified, do not need to be qualified, and are not regarded by OutdoorLads, or themselves as ‘technical experts’ but are amateur climbers with some experience and who are happy to impart their knowledge. Any advice given should be considered with this in mind by the recipient.
Members should also understand that rock climbing is weather dependant – more so than some other outdoor activities (not least as it can be dangerous to climb on wet rock). Whilst we will do everything reasonably possible to run the event as described, the event leader may need to change the location and/or other event details to best suit the anticipated weather. We will advise members booked on, or interested, in the event of this as soon as is practical, but you should understood that in certain circumstances it may be necessary to move the event to an indoor climbing centre, or cancel the event all together.
What to bring
Bring clothes suitable for spending a full day outdoors, which should include wind & waterproofs, and a few layers that will allow you to be comfortable whilst climbing, belaying as well as between climbs (Outdoor climbing can mean a lot of standing around waiting). Also wear boots or trainers for the walk upto to the crag. You will need to bring your own climbing gear harness, Climbing shoes, chalk-bag, Belay plate and screw-gate karabiner.
If you have a helmet please that as well, if you don’t have one, message the event leader as we have a few that we can lend out if requested in advance. If you have (Sport) Quick Draws and climbing rope(s) then please bring that, but make sure they are in good condition.
Food & drink
You will need a packed lunch, drinks and snacks to last you the day as we will spend the full day at the crag.
