Join us for a day out Outdoor Sports Climbing at Castle Inn Quarry!!
Unlike in Traditional (Trad) climbing, the routes for Sports Climbing already have bolted protection fixed to the rock. Once you've clipped in a Quick Draw, you clip your rope in the same way that you would on a lead climb at an indoor wall. This makes it an ideal way to transition to climbing outdoors from indoors.
Castle Inn Quarry is an ideal venue for your introduction to Outdoor Sport Climbing, with about 60 routes over 7 walls, ranging in height from 6 to 24m, with Sports Grades ranging from 3+ to 7b (but be warned these grades are a little harder than on an indoor wall!!) and a hand-full of Trad routes (VD upto E3), all nicely accessible from the car park (the main wall is literally in the car park!). Some of the routes even have twin carabiners at the top (just like an indoor climbing wall), so you don't need to worry about being able to 'Thread the lower-off", although with a couple of leaders and experienced climbers on hand, we will be more than happy to talk you through that too.
This event is aimed at climbers who have climbed recently (indoors or out), although we will try to cater for less experienced climbers too depending on the availability of leaders and the experience of other climbers. At the very least you must have some recent indoor climbing experience (ideally with OutdoorLads) and be able to put on your own climbing harness and competently tie a figure-of-eight, with stopper, knot.

Participation statement
As a BMC Affiliate member, Outdoorlads draws your attention to the fact that climbing is an activity with a danger of personal injury or death. You should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for your own actions and involvement.
Please note that every person participating should be aware of (and accept) that those members perceived as ‘in charge’ or leading the event are not necessarily qualified, do not need to be qualified, and are not regarded by OutdoorLads, or themselves as ‘technical experts’ but are amateur climbers with some experience and who are happy to impart their knowledge. Any advice given should be considered with this in mind by the recipient.
What to bring
Bring clothes suitable for spending a full day outdoors, which should include wind & waterproofs, and a few layers that will allow you to be comfortable whilst climbing, belaying as well as between climbs (Outdoor climbing can mean a lot of standing around waiting). Also wear boots or trainers for the walk upto to the crag. You will need to bring your own climbing gear harness, Climbing shoes, chalk-bag, Belay plate and screw-gate karabiner.
If you have a helmet please that as well, if you don’t have one, message the event leader as we have a few that we can lend out if requested in advance. If you have (Sport) Quick Draws and climbing rope(s) then please bring that, but make sure it is in good condition.
Food & drink
You will need a packed lunch, drinks and snacks to last you the day as we will spend the full day at the crag.
