Join us in South Essex for a day of Sun (hopefully), Sea, and Ice Cream!
This 15km (9.5 miles) linear walk starts in Shoeburyness and will take us on a leisurely walk along the Southend seafront, and ending in Leigh-on-Sea.
This will include a walk to the end of Southend-on-Sea Pier, famous for being the longest pleasure pier in the world. The plan is to stop for lunch at the end of the pier, where there is a cafe for refreshments and snacks. Please note, that entry to the pier costs £2, so please remember to bring some money to pay for this.
This is a linear walk, with both the start and end points situated on the same railway line. If driving, I would recommend parking at Leigh-on-sea station, and then getting the train to the start point of Shoeburyness. This is roughly a 25 minute journey, so please arrive in plenty of time to account for this.
If arriving by train, then Shoeburyness railway station can be reached via the London Fenchurch Street on the Southend Central/ Shoeburyness C2C line.
The route of this walk is almost all along pavements, so no risk of muddy boots and if you're new to walking/hiking with us, trainers will be fine for this one providing they have a bit of grip.
Points of Interest:
- The famous Southend-on-sea Pier, known for being the longest pleasure pier in the world!
- Great views of the Thames Estuary.
- A chance to stop for an ice cream at the Southend Rossi ice-cream parlour.
- A chance to try the Cockles from the famous Old Leigh cockle sheds at the end of the walk
What to bring
This walk is almost entirely along paved footpaths, so although walking boots may not be completely necessary, please do ensure you have comfortable and sensible shoes suitable for walking long distances in. As it is along the seafront it can be chilly so bring any layers to keep warm and also a waterproof is advised if it looks like unreliable weather.
To walk along the pier, a ticket will cost £2. There will also be an opportunity to buy ice creams/snacks along the route, so some additional cash will be required if you wish to buy anything.
Food & drink
Although there will be a few places along the route to pick up some seaside snacks, it is recommended that you bring a packed lunch and plenty of water on this walk.
