Total distance of 22 km (approx. 13.5 miles). Flat, on paved towpaths. Climb of 34m total. Approximately 6.5 hours including lunch.

The linear walk from Maghull to Liverpool follows a stretch of the 204km (127.25 miles) Leeds & Liverpool Canal, which opened in 1816 after more than 40 years of construction.

This is the final stage (8 of 8) which is covering the full length of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.

Starting in the leafy town of Maghull, the route moves from the quiet to the vibrant as we pass into the heart of Liverpool city.

There's still charm on the canal as we pass through green spaces in the urban sprawl, but as we close in on our destination we'll be passing through Bootle with many old warehouse, bridges and remnants of Liverpool's maritime heritage.

It’s a fitting finale to a journey that spans countryside, towns, and the industrial legacy of northern England - passing from one powerhouse city to another.

For anyone that wants to join, we'll have an optional pub trip in Liverpool before our return to celebrate the completion of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.

We'll return by public transport (for those that need to get back to Maghull) - however the best option will depend on your individual onward travel plans.
