Join OutdoorLads for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, as we set sail off into the Atlantic to spend 4 days on the remote Isle of Lundy, 25 miles off the Northwest Coast of Devon!
Lundy Island has been inhabited for at least 3,000 years - archaeological investigations have discovered considerable traces of Bronze and Iron Age settlements. The Dark Ages, following the fall of the Roman Empire, left Lundy shrouded in myth and legend. Marauding Vikings around the 9th century AD contributed the name – Lund-ey, meaning Puffin Island.
In a place of wide spaces and big skies, without roads, cars or pollution, simply walking is a profound pleasure. Lundy has a milder climate than the mainland, with more sunshine and less rain. The particular character of Lundy derives from its varied terrain; on the west side, exposed to the Atlantic, there are high and rugged cliffs, on the east, sheltered from the prevailing wind, the coastline is gentler with grassy slopes, trees and many types of wild flowers. This contrast explains the rich diversity of the island's animal and plant life and its attraction to walkers, climbers and divers. The sea is clear, the landscape spectacular, and at night, without competition from street lights, it is truly dark and the stars shine with unfamiliar brilliance.
We are staying in a cosy bunkhouse converted out of one of the old barns, now a hostel at the centre of Lundy life. The dormitory rooms are lined with varnished wood and its large sitting-room has an open fire. One of the island’s best views can be seen from the sleeping gallery.
ADDITIONAL COSTS
As this event is on a remote island inaccessible to vehicles, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU BOOK YOUR PASSAGE TO THE ISLAND (by boat - £64 return) as soon as possible after registering on this event --> book your passage here.
You may also wish to book accommodation in Ilfracombe for the nights before & after we sail to / from the island - Ocean Backpackers have beds for £17 if you book well in advance, and Ilfracombe has lots of hotels and B&Bs (see below).
Supplies are available in the shop on the island, but are likely to be expensive.

What to bring
For these 4 days you will need to pack lightly - as after leaving the mainland at Ilfracombe you will have to carry everything with you both on the boat, and then up the cliffs onto the island (there are no vehicles!).
Food & drink
Evening meals and breakfasts will be provided throughout our time on Lundy Island; these will be good hearty basic food, as with no vehicular access we are unable to take major supplies out to sea!
Please bring supplies for lunches, snacks and drinks throughout the full 4 days. There is a small shop on the island for basic provisions, and a pub nearby to the bunkhouse serves food and drinks.
