This urban walk is a nine mile loop through the former industrial heartland of Sheffield, starting at Sheffield Station and ending at Kelham Island. Outwards the route follows a beautiful section of the regenerated River Don to Meadowhall and the Tinsley Viaduct. We will return to the centre of Sheffield via the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal to Sheffield Canal basin, finishing at Kelham Island, the location for the Sheffield Social the same evening.
Once the beating heart of industry, Kelham Island is one of Sheffield’s oldest manufacturing sites. The manmade island was formed in the 1100s, when a stream was diverted to power a nearby mill. However, as industrial activity has moved on, the area has undergone a significant transformation in recent years and quietly become one of the most exciting parts of the city. The remains of the numerous cutlery and steel works, factories and workshops is part of what gives the area its distinct charm, except nowadays these buildings house everything from indie shopping arcades to microbreweries and galleries.
Don't forget to sign up for the Sheffield Social, which will start at the nearby Cutlery Works, The largest independent food hall in northern England showcasing a huge hive of food & drink businesses.
If you need to return to the Station or the City Centre at the end of the walk, these are just a short tram journey away.

Please bring a packed lunch. Once we start the walk there will be no opportunities to purchase food or drinks until we return to the city centre. There are various food and drink outlets on the station concourse. There will be an optional pub/cafe stop at Kelham Island at the end of the walk.
