An Evening with the Sheffield Symphony Orchestra

Join us for an evening of culture at All Saints Church Ecclesall with the Sheffield Symphony Orchestra, featuring our very own Andy Ling on the viola.

Guest conductor: Jason Thornton - Jason Thornton is the Music Director of Bath Philharmonia. He has conducted orchestras throughout the UK, Europe, America and the Far East, including the RPO, London Mozart Players, City of London Sinfonia, Beijing Symphony Orchestra, Jykasyla Sinfonia (Finland) and the Kaposvar Symphony Orchestra (Hungary).

Piano Soloist: Jeneba Kanneh-Mason - Jeneba was a Keyboard Category Finalist in BBC Young Musician 2018, winner of the Murs du Son Prize at the Lagny-Sur-Marne International Piano Competition in France, 2014, and The Nottingham Young Musician 2013. She was also winner of the Iris Dyer Piano Prize at The Royal Academy of Music, Junior Academy, where she studied with Patsy Toh.

Beethoven’s 3rd piano concerto His first in a minor key, also seen as a bridge between the Classical period governed by structure and form, and the Romantic which spoke to the heart and depicted emotions. At the premiere in 1803, Beethoven's page turner almost had a heart attack when he turned the page during the performance and the score was empty - Beethoven hadn't yet gone completely deaf (but had lost about 60% at this point) and was playing the solo part from memory.

Dvorak - Symphony no. 8 in G major Apparently reminiscent of a summer's day in the country, with rustic melodies to get you dancing, birdsong and even a thunderstorm. 

Wagner - Prelude to Act III of Lohengrin Act 3 of Lohengrin is when the wedding takes place. However, as with all opera, it's not over till the fat lady sings and there is lots of tension and tears to come before the final curtain falls.
