Elenydd Escape: Remote Wales Weekend

Ty’n Cornel sits out in the Elenydd... in the Cambrian Mountains of Mid-Wales... surrounded by open moorland, reservoirs and big, rolling hills in every direction.
It’s a really beautiful part of Wales... wide open, quiet and a bit different to the busier areas of Eryri or the South Wales mountains. You’ve got long views, winding tracks and plenty of space to just get into a steady rhythm of walking and take it all in.
Over the weekend we’ll head out for a group walk exploring the area. Other activities may be on offer depending on the leaders available.
Evenings at the hostel will be a mix of food and whatever people fancy... board games, cards or just a good catch up after being out on the hills.
If the skies are clear, it’s also a great spot for stargazing... proper dark skies and more stars than you usually get to see.
If you’re after a weekend with great scenery, a decent walk and a good group to spend it with, this should be a good one.

What to bring
The kit list for the hostel:
- Bedding: Bedding is provided
- Wash kit: remember to include a towel, shower gel and shampoo
- Flip Flops: or something similar to wear in the shower room
- Earplugs: for the shared sleeping arrangements - There are only two rooms at this hostel (two 8 bed rooms, all bunk beds)
- Slippers: Comfortable for wearing around the hostel
The kit list for the walk:
The terrain that we will be covering is on and off-road, occasionally wet and stony. If conditions are wet and/or windy there will be no shelter from the elements. I would strongly suggest the kit list below for all lowland and hill walks for OutdoorLads.
- Water: bring at least two litres
- Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
- Day rucksack: typically 20-30 litres, they are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely
- Boots: waterproof (or waterproof socks...) and breathable and designed for hiking. If you wear your best trainers, they may get ruined.
- Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters, I would recommend waterproof socks.
- Layered clothing: A t-shirt may well do if it is sunny but layers will help otherwise
- Trousers: ideally no jeans (weather dependent) as they become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry and if it is warm, shorts are OK.
- We are in a wildlife area, so ticks are a problem and they can carry lymes disease. I would suggest a full check for ticks after the walk.
- Waterproof jacket: essential when hiking in all but the calmest of weather, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry
- Waterproof trousers: that you can put on over your trousers if the weather turns against us
- Hat or cap: to provide some shade from the sun or warmth if it is cold
- Sunglasses: so you're not squinting in the sun
- Gloves because nobody likes walking with cold hands! Can leave these in the tent if it turns out to be a lovely spring day :-)
- Sun cream: Yes, essential even if overcast (Get a SFP30+ with UVA 5*, most supermarket own brands are good here). There is little shade, it is late spring and the sunburn will be painful
- Snacks: bring biscuits, energy bars, gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit for example and put them somewhere easy to get hold of
- Lunch: bring a packed lunch
Food & drink
Friday Evening: We'll have the usual OutdoorLads buffet, so please bring something that can be shared between two people (The only cooking equipment is a mini-oven countertop thing, with hobs on top. So try to avoid anything that needs extensive cooking)
Saturday Morning: Breakfast is included in the event cost - a choice of cereals, bread (toasted or otherwise), instant porridge, fruit, beans or eggs
Saturday Lunch: You need to bring a packed lunch for this. We won't pass within a few miles of any shops.
Saturday Evening: Dinner is included in the event cost - Main course and dessert.
Sunday Morning: Breakfast is again included in the event cost
Tea & coffee: Will be available throughout the weekend - There'll also be biscuits and some cakes.
Other drinks: Please bring your own. There are no shops within a considerable drive, so bring everything you need!
