Meeting in Cardiff, we'll catch a train to Taff's Well and walk 14km (9miles) back along the famous River Taff into Cardiff city centre.
On the way we'll visit Castell Coch, William Burges' 19th Century neo-gothic masterpiece, described as "one of the greatest Victorian triumphs of architectural composition." There'll be plenty of time to explore inside the castle (and the tea room) before we head back down the Taff.
NB. While this is a fairly easy walk, the first 2km are mainly uphill (an initial 140m climb) along paths which can be uneven.
What to bring
This is a fairly easy walk along well established footpaths and bridleways. However these can get muddy so bring your boots/walking shoes or a pair of sturdy trainers if you don’t mind getting them muddy.
The route is quite well sheltered all the way along but this is Wales so please have something warm and waterproof and in your backpack just in case!
*You’ll need to bring money for the train and to get into Castell Coch*
Train fare from Cathays to Taffs Well is just under £4
Entrance to Castell Coch is £7.30
Food & drink
We will stop regularly and there’ll be time for lunch along the way. The castle has a tea-room/restaurant but service can be slow. Bring a light packed lunch and plenty to drink.
