An 18km (11 mile) very flat and pretty easy walk.  A semi-rural route starting in Monton in Salford, this day walk tracks the Bridgewater canal, the catalyst of the industrial revolution, taking in the ancient estate of the man who built it we’ll head out past his former home now the construction site of the new RHS national garden at Worsley New Hall.  Following the course of the canal to Astley, we’ll then head across the notorious peat bog that is Chat Moss.  It’s here we’ll cross another world first, the famous “floating” Manchester to Liverpool railway, depending on conditions we might have rolling views as far as Winter Hill.  Once across the moss we’ll skirt Barton Aerodrome before linking back-up to the canal for the final stretch on our return to Monton where there will be the opportunity for a pub stop at the canal side at the Waterside inn.  We will need to start on time due to the short days at this time of year.
