This event is part of the OutdoorLads BIG North Christmas 2025 Weekend and is intended for those attending this event.

Join Ian on this 12km circular walk that takes in an Instagram classic view across Grasmere, a summit of Loughrigg Fell (331m), then down to Skelwith Bridge to see the waterfalls, then back via Elterwater and if time permits, a pint before heading back to the hostel.

Thou only at the height of 331m, Loughrigg Fell can still boast some outstanding views of the Lakes!

The first part of the hike takes in Loughrigg Terrace with stunning views across Grasmere. The walk takes in Rydal Caves -  This famous lakeland beauty spot is actually man-made, as a result of slate quarrying. From Rydal Caves the walk takes us along paths following the river passing near Rydal Village.

The hike takes in the summit Loughrigg (weather dependent & not too arduous on the knees!)

From Loughrigg we’ll descend towards Skelwith Bridge (not before walking around the Tranquil Loughrigg Tarn).

Once we reach Skelwith Bridge, we’ll have time for a hot drink & cake or the Talbot bar if you fancy something a little stronger.

The latter part of the hike following the river up past Skelwith Force before heading back to the hostel.

NB: This is a winter walk at some height so expect cold temperatures so please dress accordingly. This, combined with some steep sections, both going up and down, means that this hike will be a vigorous full-day out.
