BIRMINGHAM Indoor Climbing - MONDAY - Experienced
3 people attending
3 places left
Join OutdoorLads for an evening of indoor climbing & bouldering at Redpoint Climbing Centre in Birmingham.
"EXPERIENCED" in this instance is those that have previously climbed & can answer YES to all three of these questions:
- Can you fit a climbing harness correctly?
- Can you tie in to a rope using the correct knots?
- Can you belay another climber correctly & confidently?
Please ensure you only sign up for this event if you satisfy all three of the prerequisites as an experienced climber!
Never climbed before? Need a refresher on the basics? Answered NO to any of the three questions above? You will need to attend a beginners event instead, where we will happily sign you in to be supervised (two people per leader maximum), show you the ropes & teach you everything you need to know to climb safely!
Bouldering - Whilst most of us do roped climbing, if you prefer to do bouldering, you can sign yourself in & go bouldering (unsupervised) instead of, or as well as, roped climbing. Please meet the leader & the group at the start though; some others might wish to do bouldering too!
Please note that we will not teach lead climbing or lead belaying on this event - we would suggest having some lessons in Lead Climbing by a qualified member of staff if this is something you're interested in pursuing!
Whilst this event finishes at 8pm, the centre is open until 10pm if you wish to continue climbing for longer!
If you are subsequently unable to attend, please cancel off the event as 'no-shows' are frustrating for the leader & other attendees.
Redpoint Climbing Centre
Indoor climbing centres offer the challenges of climbing that you'll find on natural rock crags - simply indoors! It's a fun way to stay fit, make new friends & develop your climbing skills.
Climbing - Unlike Indoor Bouldering there is a certain amount of skill to be mastered, such as tying in knots & belaying a partner, as well as the climbs being higher than in bouldering. If you are new to climbing or would like a refresher, then this is just for you!! If you’ve climbed before, can safely tie into a harness & can competently belay, then there’s plenty of choices of top-rope & lead climbing on offer here.
Bouldering - Instead of tackling long high routes, the 'problems' (as they are referred to) are shorter & focus on technique, balance, body positioning & sometimes power. With the different emphasis, bouldering doesn't have the hassle of climbing with ropes, so it’s excellent (but not necessarily easier) for newcomers.
Redpoint Climbing Centre has more than 75 lines with over 300 routes, set through some spectacular ground including its notorious 'stalactite'. It even features one of the few indoor 'Yorkshire VS cracks' in the country, to test your jamming skills. The bouldering rooms are just as interesting as its climbing routes, over 200 bouldering problems have been organised into graded circuits to provide something for everyone.
You MUST register via this event page before coming to the centre!

What to bring
CLIMBING EQUIPMENT
If you have your own climbing gear, you can bring these along. Please make sure that your harness is in good condition, & get one of the staff to check it is safe to use if you are unsure. At minimum you will need the use of a climbing harness & rock shoes.
If you do not have your own, you will be able to hire what you need directly from the climbing centre. Please see their website for current prices (prices are subject to change).
Equipment can be hired from the centre as follows:
- Harness - £3.50
- Rock Shoes - £3.50
- Belay Device - £2.50
- Gear Set - £7
WHAT TO WEAR
There is a changing area upstairs & free lockers are available (ask at reception).
Avoid tight fitting clothing which hampers movement. OutdoorLads branded clothing is welcome as it gives the group a good level of visibility. Bring additional layers to keep you warm in-between climbs during the colder months. Jewellery should be removed before climbing in order to avoid injury.
Rock shoes can be worn with or without socks & should fit snuggly. However, if you are using hire shoes, I would wear a thin pair of socks with these for hygiene purposes!
Food & drink
The Redpoint Climbing Centre café sells a selection of snacks, cakes, hot & cold drinks.
