Beam, Steam and Wind - Great Bedwyns Historical Stroll

Our walk starts in Great Bedwyn, a small village with a grand past, once wielded political weight as a "rotten borough," sending MPs to Parliament from its modest hearths. But today, it invites us for a stroll steeped not in politics, but Wind & Water.

The first of our two historical monuments is Wilton Windmill, standing proud on the Wiltshire skyline since 1821, was born from necessity when the Kennet & Avon Canal stole the wind out of water transport. The villagers, unwilling to let trade blow away, erected this four-sailed beauty. By the mid-19th century, its mighty sails ground wheat into flour for local bakers. After years of silence, it was lovingly restored in the 1970s. Today, it’s not just a relic—flour is still milled here on special days, and visitors can see the intricate wooden machinery. It’s a monument to resilience, where wind-powered tradition meets the modern-day, and where the sails still spin tales of a community’s spirit. We will visit the grounds of the Windmill, and there will be opportunity to enter the Windmill (subject to no guided tours taking place at the same time)

We then continue our walk towards the Crofton Beam Engine, a colossal 1812 creation. This isn’t just any beam engine, it’s the only one still puffing in the world. Originally tasked with pumping water uphill to keep the Kennet & Avon Canal afloat, it’s a marvel of engineering. It once powered trade routes, lifting canal boats across chalky hills. It still steams on select weekends, a living giant that pulls us back to the canal era. Stand in its presence, and you’ll feel the pulse of industrial ambition echoing into today. (We are visiting on a non steaming day)

Is it dog friendly? 

All my walks are dog friendly, however please have your dog under control at all times. There will be livestock on route. Ensure you abide by the Countryside Code (https://tinyurl.com/rlqvp3h). Remember not everyone loves dogs as much as you do so please be mindful of other members.
