Join me for a wander in the heart of the High Weald - a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  We'll follow a circular route through the rolling landscape, passing through Mayfield around lunch time where we'll stop for a packed lunch after exploring the village's beautiful high street and impressive church.  On the return route we'll pass through Wadhurst Village where we'll visit a pub before finally heading back to the station (about a 40 minute walk from the village.)

Difficulty : although it's not a huge walk it is likely to be a strenuous day out.  With the short days we'll need to set a reasonable pace to cover the distance.  This, combined with muddy paths and the rolling landscape of the Weald, means you'll have earned your trip to the pub near the end !

If you have a small torch it might be worth bringing it as the footpath back to the train station from the village is not that well lit and with the early sunset it may be dark by the time we get back there.

Points of Interest:

Clootie Well : just before Mayfield we pass an example of a clootie well (second picture) in the woods - quite spooky when I first stumbled across it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clootie_well

Mayfield : Mayfield Village is a beautiful historic village with an impressive church.  It's famous for the legend of St Dunstan who was working at a blacksmith's forge when the devil paid him a visit in the guise of a young lass.  Unfortunately for the devil, St Dunstan noticed the devil's hooves beneath her skirts and grabbed the devil by the nose with a pair of pincers.  This legend is depicted in the village sign : http://www.publicsculpturesofsussex.co.uk/object?id=118.
