Here are the main points of topographical and historical interest:

Hambledon: A scattered village in five or so fragments, the one near the church being the most picturesque. The cottages are sturdy brick and tile throughout, mostly Victorian.

Dunsfold: An attractive, genuine village built along the west side of an enormous common which is narrow and neat at the northern end and wide and wild at the southern. Its layout and honesty make it seem more like a Sussex village than a Surrey one. The church is to itself and surrounded by sturdy Wealden farms, tiled and weatherboarded, the oldest being 15th century. The Sun Inn - our lunch venue - is Grade II listed and dates from the 18th century.

St Mary and All Saints, Dunsfold: This is a rarity: a complete village church of 1270 built by royal masons that may have worked on Westminter Abbey, hence the quality of the carving. The Victorian alterations are minor. The 13th-century pews are a highlight. For Simon Jenkins this one of England's thousand best churches.

Chiddingfold: A large, pretty village with a loose array of attractive houses arranged around a triangular green. Rustic, timbered cottages are mixed with urbane, symmetrical Georgian houses and picturesque, tile-hung Victorian ones.

The Crown Inn, Chiddingfold: A big, half-timbered 15th century pub, possibly earlier as there is a record of a house in the village being let as an inn in 1383. The kingpost roof, panelling and staircase warrant particular notice.
