South Wales Coastal Weekend

Newport Bay / Trefdraeth - Pembrokeshire / Sir Benfro 3 to 5 October 2014

Take the final chance in 2014 to get some sand twixt your toes and cling on to the last of the warmer weather on the glorious beaches of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Above our village a Norman castle watches over the medieval streets as they wend their way down to the sea and the quaint harbour, filled with fishing boats. The hills behind, known as the Mountains of Angels, offer views across the sea to Ireland. Closer to home, are amazing cliff top walks, which drop down to sandy coves and rocky pools, where the waves come crashing into the Witches' Cauldron. Beyond lie ancient Welsh villages, iron age forts and Celtic monuments...

What Is The Area Like?

The Pembrokeshire Coast is Britain's only truly coastal National Park. It's a spectacular landscape of rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, wooded estuaries and wild inland hills, and a place of sanctuary for wildlife.Newport Bay, is a tiny medieval town, lying in the Welsh speaking part of the National Park. It's dominated by its Norman castle and wide expanse of sand on the Avon Nyfer estuary. The town has a variety of intriguing shops, numerous art galleries, craft shops, antique shops, books shops and coffee shops. Local pubs and restaurants provide extensive seafood menus, including locally caught sewin, lobster and crab. Walking from the town provides great opportunities to explore not only the coastal cliffs and beaches, but also inland to ancient Celtic monuments and iron age forts, which seem to stand the test of time. Perhaps the greatest geological marvel of the area is a collapsed sea cave system, known as the Witches' Cauldron.
