Join Chris for this search for an elusive cave, once the difference between life and death for James Carnegy, the 6th Earl of Balnamoon, in the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden. Invermark castle was his home but with a price on his head he had to hide from the Red Coats, and he found this bolthole that he made home for over a year.
This is a relatively flat walk going up the eastern bank of the Water of Mark and returning down the western bank. The route is on good paths most of the way, but there are a couple of river crossings that can be tricky after a wet spell. Passing a waterfall, we can seek out the elusive Balnamoon's Cave and then explore a second waterfall before turning back and following the western riverbank downstream. There is lots of wildlife to be seen on this walk and Glen Mark is a great area to spot adders sunbathing on a sunny day, so keep your eyes open!
