Northumberland Waterfall and Hills

This is a 10 miles circular walk around a beautiful corner of Northumberland, just south of Wooler. We start from the end of the public road at the hamlet of Hartside, through the tiny village of Linhope and on to Linhope Spout, a beautiful waterfall set in a wooded glade. In winter, the force of water should be impressive. It tumbles 18 metres down a rockface to the plunge pool below.
From here, we head up to Hedgehope Hill. At 714m, this is a good climb, but on good tracks throughout to the summit. If the conditions are clear, we will be rewarded with some of the finest hilltop views in the Cheviots, far better than the Cheviot itself, just 2 or 3 miles to the west. On a clear day Holy Island, Bamburgh Castle and the Farne Islands can all clearly be seen. Meanwhile to the west The Cheviot looms most impressively.
We retace our steps partway down Hedgehope Hill, before hugging the forest edge of Threestoneburn Wood, and on to Dunmoor Hill. This section could be quite muddy, unless we are blessed with a hard frost.
We continue close to the forest with good views to the south throughout before joining a bridlepath back to Linhope, then retracing our steps to the start at Hartside.
If you fancy making a weekend of it, find some accommodation nearby in Wooler and join the Sunday walk around Chillingham.
What to bring
This is the height of winter, so make sure bring plenty of layers for warmth, plus full waterproofs. Absolutely no jeans! Decent walking boots, gloves, hat etc essential. The indchill on the summit opf Hedgehope Hill could be well beloz zero.
Food & drink
Bring a packed lunch and hot drink. We can find a pub or tea room in a nearby location, maybe Wooler, after the walk.
