Bouldering centres offer the challenges of climbing without the hassle of rope work or harnesses! It's a fun way to stay fit, you'll quickly begin to develop arm, back, finger and core strength as a result of the many reaches and holds that are repeated through to the completion of a climb. It’s also a great opportunity to refine your technique and improve any other roped climbing you undertake. It’s a great full-body workout!
With a range of slabs, roofs and overhangs there really is something for every level of climber. Mile End wall boasts some of the tallest bouldering walls you'll encounter as well as an outdoor bouldering area and cave room. They also have a small number of top-roping, lead and auto-belay routes.
To come along, you will need to register via the ODL event page, and to climb you will need to pay an entry fee directly to the centre when you arrive. for entry fee prices go to: https://www.mileendwall.org.uk/about/climbing-prices.
If you have not been to Mile End climbing wall before you will need to register with them before being allowed to use the facilities. This will only need to be done the first time you go to the centre, on all subsequent visits you only need to turn up and pay the entry fees. Please check you are clear about the venue for a given evening as Thursday bouldering sessions move around.
It is important that if you are going to come along that you sign up so the event leader knows who to expect. For your first time bouldering with us, please contact the event leader in advance to let him know what your skills and experience are.
This event is aimed at members who have been bouldering before and do not require a guided session in order to boulder. All members that fulfil this criteria are welcome to come along to any of the Thursday sessions. If you feel you need a guided session, why not take a look at our weekly Saturday sessions at Vauxwall Bouldering Centre!
To keep things fresh, the Thursday event changes venues from week to week - please ensure you check out the venue below to make sure you're in the right place!
What to bring
You don't need much equipment for bouldering at all, which is another part of its appeal. The only specialist kit you will need are (rock) climbing shoes which can be hired from the centre if you haven't got your own. Usually other members will have chalk with them or this can also be hired if you prefer to climb with chalk. Hire prices can be found at: https://www.mileendwall.org.uk/about/climbing-prices.
As the centre offers some roped climbing routes, you may wish to bring your harness, belay and rope and find a partner to climb with on the night.
£1 coins are needed to get a locker key which is returned at the end of the session.
Shower facilities are available at the centre should you wish to refresh yourself after the session. The centre closes at 10:30pm so you may need to be swift if you climb until 10pm.
What to wear
It is best to wear either shorts, combats or tracksuit bottoms. No jeans or any form of trouser which hampers movement. A t-shirt or vest is also suitable. As an experienced climber, feel free to wear the usual climbing gear you feel comfortable in.
If you have any OutdoorLads branded clothing then please try and wear this as it will give the group a good level of visibility.
Any jewellery such as rings, watches, chains or bangles should be removed before beginning the session to prevent injury.
Food & drink
There is a cafe area at the centre where hot and cold drinks along with limited snacks can be purchased. Bottled drinks can also be purchased here.
It is best to have a drink with you at the beginning of the session to stayed hydrated. There may or may not be a group break during the session but the advantage of bouldering is you can climb or rest at your own pace and there is plenty of time to socialise with other members on the mats.
