London Indoor Beginners Climbing

Come and join OutdoorLads at The Castle Climbing Centre! The Castle is the 'premier climbing centre' in South East England, receiving more annual visits than any other centre in the UK. Constructed within a massive Victorian pumping station it really does look like a castle. There are 450 routes over 95 lines set across 1000 metres of wall. With a range of slabs, cracks, roofs, off-widths, stepped roofs and long overhangs there really is something for every level of climber. The Castle has a busy, vibrant social atmosphere, to which the OutdoorLads climbers certainly add. We are a friendly group, breaking for coffee mid-evening to socialise.

Indoor climbing centres offer the challenges of climbing that you'll find on natural outdoor structures - simply indoors! It's a fun way to stay fit, you'll quickly begin to develop arm, back, finger and core strength as a result of the many reaches and holds that are repeated through to the completion of a climb. It's a great upper-body workout! Who is this event aimed at? This event is for members have either never climbed before or have tried it but cannot sign themselves into the Centre. Please pay the event charge when you sign up - this contributes to the event running costs. You will still need to pay the climbing centre direct for entry on the event day. It is important that all members sign up through the event page to make sure the event leader has all information of the members attending. This event is open to all full, trial and guest OutdoorLads members who are climbing novices. If you are a competent climber and can sign yourself into the climbing wall, please register on the London 'advanced' event page.

Entry fee and equipment hire If you don’t have your own climbing gear you can hire them inside the centre. If you have not been to the centre before you will need to complete their registration form when you arrive. Entry to the centre on this event is at the centres standard rate. For the centres current entry rates please click on this link. Kit hire prices are Climbing Shoes: £2.50 Harness: £2.50 Belay set: £2.00.

Novice/Regular/Expert climber Can you answer YES to these 3 questions...?

  1. Can you tie the correct knots (figure of eight and stopper)?
  2. Can you fit a harness correctly?
  3. Can you belay?

If you can answer

Yes

to the above questions you are probably competent to sign yourself into the centre and need to sign up to the 'experienced' event.

If

No

, then please don't be put off. All this means is you will need to be signed in to the centre by the event leader who will then provide you with an evening’s tuition on the above three techniques. This will be at a ratio of 2 novices to 1 leader.

Please use the link at the top of this page to pay. (Payments are used to cover the costs of organising the event, buying group equipment and to pay the wall entrance fees of members who sign in 2 members).

Progression to the 'experienced' group After two sessions the event leader will let you know whether you are able to sign up to the experienced events. If so please check the event listing pages for the next available 'experienced' event. If not don't worry, you will just need to sign up to further Beginners sessions where the event leader will happliy instruct you until you can safely climb unsupervised.

Please Note

: Every person participating should be aware of (and accept) that those members perceived as ‘in charge’ or leading the event are not necessarily qualified, do not need to be qualified, and are not regarded by OutdoorLads, or themselves as ‘technical experts’ but are amateur climbers with some experience and who are happy to impart their knowledge. Any advice given should be considered with this in mind by the recipient.
