Black Mountains Weekend at Cadarn Bunkhouse (38234)

Event Overview

Christmas and New Year have gone, and spring’s still a little way off, so February is always a month where there’s not much going on! Why not join us then for a weekend nestled at the foot of The Black Mountains in Cadarn?

The northeast part of the Brecon Beacons National Park is dominated by the Black Mountains; a group of old red sandstone hills, the highest of which is Waun Fach. They're cloaked in grass and heather and laced with rivers. Located to the east of Hay-on-Wye, Talgarth, Llangorse, Crickhowell and Abergavenny, the Black Mountains form a natural border with Herefordshire, England. They provide stunning views and some fantastic walks.

Originally a small Welsh hill farm, Cadarn Bunkhouse is surrounded by its own land and fabulous views of the Black Mountains and the Wye Valley. There’s easy access to the many walks in the mountains directly from Cardarn using a private track.

It enjoys a quiet, peaceful location, perfect for just chilling out, yet is only half a mile from the village of Felindre, with a friendly local pub; it’s also just four miles from Talgarth and five from Hay-on-Wye. Talgarth has a working flour Mill and Hay is famous for its book shops and literary festival, both have a selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants, and there are small supermarkets in both towns should you need to stop off on route.

Itinerary

Friday Evening: Arrive, meet others and socialise, welcome meeting and a possible evening activity.  We'll have the usual Outdoor lads buffet. Please bring something that can be shared between two or three people.

Saturday Day: After breakfast (which is included in the event cost), we’ll head out into the surrounding countryside for a good walk, and may even find a pub somewhere along the way. Please bring a packed lunch with you though and maybe pack a flask for a hot drink if it’s really wintery.

Saturday Evening: Dinner is also included in the event cost (I’m known for my cooking, so I promise you won’t be disappointed!), after which there's time to relax, socialise and we may have an activity to join in if you wish.

Sunday: After breakfast (included in the event cost) you are either free to go home or join us for a trip into one of the local towns (possible Talgarth), ending up at a local pub for a Sunday roast.

Accommodation

Cadarn Bunkhouse is centrally heated, has seven rooms on the first floor, each sleeping between four and eight (The Old Stables has four rooms and The Tack Barn has three rooms), and there are views across the valley from most of the rooms. The bunk beds are modern, metal framed, with full sized matresses.

There are three shower/toilet rooms on the ground floor, with eight toilets and six showers between them. The dining room has picnic style tables with bench seating, stone walls and exposed beams. There is a lounge room with comfortable settees and chairs and a pool table. The added bonus is that the kitchen has a commercial dish washer, so no one need go home with wish water hands!

The bunkhouse can sleep up to 39 people so there should be plenty of space to spread out.

Directions

How to get there by car:

The Bunkhouse is just 2 miles from the A438 Brecon to Hereford road at Three Cocks (yes really!). Turn off the A438 at the Three Cocks Hotel and follow the Tregoyd Mountain Riders tourist signs to Felindre (Velindre). Turn at the Three Horseshoes pub in Felindre, drive straight up through the village and Cadarn is on the left hand side.

By public transport:

Nearest railway stations are Abergaveny and Hereford, both are about 25 miles away. From Abergaveny the best option is taxi. From Hereford, there is the option of bus towards Brecon, Stagecoach No 39. Get off at the Three Cocks (Old Barn Inn stop) and it's a walk from there. If you do need to come by public transport we may be able to arrange a pick-up if there is a willing volunteer.
