Fancy doing something different over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend? Don't waste it trotting around the shops; escape from the town and get out into the countryside at OutdoorLads' BIG Spring Camp 2017!

This is an action packed long weekend suitable for all and designed to have a bit of everything to give you a chance to try something new or to just enjoy your favourite outdoor pursuits.

BIG Spring Camp is one of our most popular annual events and many members say it is THE event to attend. If you've heard of OutdoorLads and wondered what sort of stuff we get up to this is your ideal first event as there's such a wide range of daytime and evening activities available to try.

Where this camp differs from most of the smaller camps we organise is that we don't just plan the outdoor activities - we also bring everything together for you in one place. So not only will there be plenty of daytime outdoor activities but also evening entertainment, food and drink.

We have exclusive use of the site so it makes it much easier to get to know other members as you can be sure that everyone you meet is a member of OutdoorLads.

Still not sure this is the event for you? Read some of the reviews from our 2016 weekend by choosing the 'BIG SPRING CAMP 2016 REVIEWS' drop-down below!

Where do I meet?
Please meet at the designated meeting point at 08:45. This activity departs direct from the campsite. You'll meet your instructor on site who will then drive you by minibus to the activity. You should be back on site by 16:30.
What do I need to bring?
Bouyancy aids, helmets and cags are provided, but you'll need to wear loose fitting clothing including waterproof (hiking) trousers / shorts, a base layer and a fleece if it's chilly. These should be preferably made from man made fibres such as nylon or polyester. In theory you won't go in the water, but it is a possibility so don't forget to take a towel and a change of clothes. Wear an old pair of trainers you don't mind getting wet. Flip flops are also fine if the weather's good. Ensure you have any personal medical items with you and don't forget a packed lunch and a drink.

Mine Exploration Day (Saturday)

27 May, 2017 - 08:45 to 16:30
Overview
Come underground on a voyage of discovery into a hidden world under a Welsh mountain. These disused mine passages, tunnels and caverns are testament to slate extraction activities here over a hundred years ago. Over time, rocks have fallen, roofs have collapsed and water has reclaimed parts of these labyrinths.
What happens?
Your day’s exploration will involve a short walk to a hidden (and secured) low entrance into the mines, paddling a dinghy in the dark over a flooded bottomless (?) mine shaft, zip wiring across other flooded parts, traversing underground cliff faces and abseiling down into a cavern to enjoy your lunch amongst the debris from a rock fall. If you were expecting to be just wandering along some tunnels, you are in for so much more. You’ll be harnessed up and kitted out with a head torch to help you navigate. There will be an opportunity to experience total darkness in the bowels of the mountain. Your guide is one of the few experts on the layout of this maze of tunnels, unexpected drops and dead ends. So, you will be in safe hands and work together as a team for the more difficult challenges. To complete your adventure and get back to the daylight, higher up the mountain side, you must finish by climbing up a waterfall- you will get wet!
Where do I meet?
Please meet at the designated meeting point at 08:45. This activity departs direct from camp. You'll meet your instructor on site who will then drive you by minibus to the activity which is around 25 minutes away. You should be back on site by 16:30.
What do I need to bring?
Helmet, harnesses, head lamps, rucksacks and all technical equipment will be provided. You'll need to wear wellies, a warm base layer and fleece and old waterproofs (these WILL get dirty). Ensure you have any personal medical items with you and don't forget a packed lunch and a drink.

Learn to use climbing skills to negotiate technical sections of coastline. The emphasis here is of climbing above the water and it's one of the activity highlights of Spring Camp. A short journey from the campsite takes us to nearby Anglesey where we can climb along the base of cliffs, at sea level, to create an adventurous journey. There are places where climbing is no longer possible and we'll set up our own rope bridges to get across the gaps. Always a favourite BIG Spring Camp activity, white water rafting at the National White Water Centre means taking on the challenging Afon Tryweryn where you'll be swept through crashing waves and boulder strewn rapids on this fast flowing Welsh mountain river. This two hour session takes you down the Upper Tryweryn’s grade 3-4 natural, Welsh mountain white water rapids, with enough time to usually fit in 4 exciting and challenging runs of the 1.5km section! See us in action two years ago at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Oi0hxEoV9E
What happens?
After a short drive to the National White Water Centre in nearby Bala, you'll meet your instructor who will give you a safety briefing and then kit you out for an adventure on the rapids. You will then be bused up to the start point where you'll begin your first run down the course. After each run they'll take you back up to the top of the river to start another descent. Each trip down will offer new and exciting challenges as you become more confident paddlers and your guide becomes more determined to get you wet! Each run down the river lasts approximately 20 minutes, and the rafting course is around 2km in length. It is a steep, rocky course and the river is classed as a grade 3/4. This is a worldwide accepted rating that grades the technical difficulty of rapids on a river. Grade 1 is gentle flowing water, and grade 6 is considered commercially un-runnable. This is a high adrenaline activity. You will get wet!
Where do I meet?
Please meet at the designated meeting point at 09:30. The Bala Rafting centre is about 45 - 60 mins drive away on local roads. We will be looking for people to car share to get there. You need to arrive at the centre by 10:30 to be kitted out with wet suits and to be briefed before you take to the water for your 11am session. You'll arrive back on site around 14:15.
What do I need to bring?
Wet suits and helmets are included in your event fee but you'll need to take a towel and a pair of shorts or swimming trunks to wear beneath your wetsuit. Wear an old pair of trainers you don't mind getting wet or wetsuit boots if you have them and ensure you have any personal medical items with you. There are lockers in the changing rooms for you to leave your clothes.

We will be looking for people to car share to get there. You need to arrive and check-in 45 minutes before your 11:30 train departs. You should be back on site by 15:00.
What do I need to bring?
Please wear appropriate clothing for the weather. Jeans are bad news in rain as are cotton t-shirts. Carry layers of clothing in your bag that you can put on or remove as desired. You will probably need a fleece and a waterproof jacket as a minimum. Consider you are in a mountainous environment and temperatures will drop. It may be cold and windy at the top of Snowdon. Despite being on a train for most of the event, sturdy trainers or walking boots are useful at the summit. Ensure you have any personal medical items with you. You'll need a packed lunch and a small bottle of water and bring your camera! This is a shop at the summit so bring some cash.
Why not make a day of it?
Once you've enjoyed this amazing experience, why not have lunch in Llanberis and enjoy the Electric Mountain Tour in the afternoon? You'll need to book both activities (you'll find the Electric Mountain Tour under the SUNDAY 28 MAY 2017 PM tab).

Mine Exploration Day (Sunday)

28 May, 2017 - 08:45 to 16:30
Overview
Explore one of North Wales' many mines and enjoy an underground adventure through the vast networks of tunnels and chambers that were carved out of the insides of some of the Welsh mountains over a century ago.

Electric Mountain Tour

28 May, 2017 - 15:00 to 18:00
Overview
When it was fully commissioned in 1984, Dinorwig Power Station was regarded as one of the world's most imaginative engineering and environmental project. Today, Dinorwig's operational characteristics and dynamic response capability are still acknowledged the world over. Dinorwig is the largest scheme of its kind in Europe. Dinorwig is comprised of 16km of underground tunnels, deep below Elidir mountain. Its construction required 1 million tonnes of concrete, 200,000 tonnes of cement and 4,500 tonnes of steel. The station's six powerful generating units stand in Europe's largest man-made cavern. Adjacent to this lies the main inlet valve chamber housing the plant that regulates the flow of water through the turbines. Dinorwig's reversible pump/turbines are capable of reaching maximum generation in less than 16 seconds. Using off-peak electricity the six units are reversed as pumps to transport water from the lower reservoir, back to Marchlyn Mawr.
What happens?

What to bring

If you haven’t been camping since you were in the Scouts here is what you need. If it’s your first trip you are likely to want to get away with the bare minimum.

  • Tents start off relatively cheap but as they say you get what you pay for. These tend to start from £10 upwards (‘festival tents’) that are light and do the job – but only just. You may find that they leak, break or blow away.
  • A thin foam ‘carry mat’ is good to sleep on (under £10) and you can use your clothes to make a pillow. Or if you have the room places like Tesco often sell air beds that cost as little as a fiver.
  • Don’t forget you will need something to sleep in. You can buy a sleeping bag from as little as a tenner. This will tend to be thin but will do the job at most summer camps. At camps later in the year you will want something warmer though.
  • Some places such as Argos/ASDA sell camping sets where you can buy a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat and a lamp for approx. £50-£60.
  • If you have friends that camp you may find it beneficial to talk to them first and they may even lend you some kit.
  • You can easily beg a cup of tea from more seasoned campers – but it helps if you have a cup, and don’t forget a plastic glass if you like your wine! If you are coming by car, a folding chair (£10) is great. As you may be sitting outside late into the evening. Some proper warm clothing always comes in handy – even in the summer. Don’t forget a torch, or you may never make it back to your tent. Finally, ear plugs are always a great idea.

Once you have been once or twice you will know what kit you need to be able to cook a full English breakfast and host a party for 8 in your tent. Until then the above basics will see you right.

The above information will help you with the camp its self, depending on the activities you choose to do you may need to bring further kit. However its worth noting that any of the activities where special kit is need it will be provided, in most cases all you will need is walking boots, clothes, and a small back-pack (bring a few changes of clothes and footwear).

The bar is a permanent fixture in the club house offering an indoor space to relax and eat during the day/early evening then later it become a lively space with entertainment into the early hours.

We have a large number of draught/bottled beers, lagers and spirts as well as soft and hot drinks. For those real ale lovers that have been before you will remember the range of real ales that come from the brewery just a mile away.

The Bar is operated by OutdoorLads. The prices are kept low and all the profit made goes right back into supporting the charity.

The Marquee
Our marquee, located next to the club house is normally a quieter space with games and light background music. It's open 24 hours as a meeting space away from the camping fields as groups gathering by tents can disturb others.

we want your video!

After the event we'll be putting together a video showing off the best of BIG Spring Camp and what OutdoorLads get up to and we need your help. Throughout the weekend, please use your GoPro, iPhone or video camera to capture the fun and then email your clips to support@outdoorlads.com - if your files are too large, you can upload them to a file sharing website and email us the link.

big spring camp 2016 reviews

Still not sure this is the event for you? Read some of the reviews from our 2016 weekend!

  • It was an amazing weekend. Loved it. Really well organised and delivered. A credit to the organisers and volunteers who led events, staffed the bar and made a great weekend happen. My 4th and probably the best spring camp ever. Well done.

  • I'm very grateful for the efforts of all the volunteers. It far exceeded my expectations and I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Thank you!

  • Fantastic weekend all round!

  • I had an excellent time and hope to volunteer more at the next event.

  • It was a very well run event - Well done to all the Outdoor Lads team for making it run as smoothly as it did.

  • The whole weekend was a fantasticly well run event from start to finish. The highlight of my year. Thanks to everyone.

  • Thanks to all the leaders and volunteers who worked so hard to create a truly amazing event.

  • This was my third Spring Camp - every year as soon as I get home I put the one for the following year in to my diary. It's probably becoming more of a pilgrimage now, rather than just a weekend away :)

  • Overall, it was a really enjoyable weekend, and I thank the organisers wholeheartedly for their time and effort in putting together a great weekend. We look forward to attending next year's Big Spring Camp, if not something sooner!

  • Just an awesome community / family. You all do an amazing job and I am immensely proud to be a part of the ODL magic. Thank you.

  • This was the best Spring camp ever for me - regardless of its size. I've been coming since 2008 invariably and this was just amazing. The events team - Simon, Nas, Liam, Will, Chris, Matt and Greg were so in control but at the same time they were so calm and organised.

  • Absolutely loved the weekend. Thank you so much for organising it!

  • Everyone was warm and welcoming. The organisation from the ODL team was amazing - and the time and effort that must have gone into it all must be applauded. Simon really shone, and Nas worked his behind off - as did everyone involved. This has to be one of the best gay events I have attended - not just an ODL event. to organise so many men so well is astounding. It makes me proud to be a member, and cannot praise the ODL community enough.

  • It was a fabulous event. I have been 6 times over the last 7 years - it was the best yet. I've enjoyed them all - even the wet and muddy ones
