During 2017, we are planning to offer at least one Munro day-walk each month of the year. For January we'll kick off the programme with a relatively easy climb of this solitary mountain on the southern edge of the Highlands.

Ben Chonzie (or Ben-y-Hone as it is sometimes known) is an Anglicised version of its Gaelic name - Beinn a' Chòinnich (mossy hill). Only just a Munro, at 3054ft (931m), its upper slopes are home to a large population of mountain hares. It can be climbed by two possible routes - one from from Glen Turret near Crieff and the other from Glen Lednock near Comrie - the latter being the proposed route for this walk, which will be approx. 8 miles (13km). We follow an easy (often stony) rising track for about 2.5 m/4km, climb steadily for another 1m/1.6km  to the plateau and then cross easy open high moorland to the summit. As Ben Chonzie is just north of the highland boundary fault there will be (cloud level permitting) excellent view to the south. Higher hills to the north can also be seen.

Although a relatively easy hill-walk, following paths for much of the climb, bear in mind that the snow level is likely to be low and you should come fully prepared for winter conditions.
