Join me and have a whale of a time on this, the first day of three walks, as we explore Yorkshire's Coast from RSPB Bempton Cliffs. Please note I have changed the start time of this walk to 10.45am to coincide with the train leaving from Bridlington at 10.38am. This give you the option of leaving your car near the end point.

We start our walk from Bembpton station at 10.45 and head to the cliffs. Teetering above the North Sea on top of Bempton's 100-metre tall white cliff you can see monumental stacks offshore, some tenuously connected by arches, and all riddled with caves and blowholes.

This is northern Britain's only chalk sea cliff, a 10-mile long tilt of rock that takes a giant bite out of the North Sea, culminating in Flamborough Head, one of Britain's greatest coastal sites and Flamborough is said to be one of the best places to see whales in the UK.

At Thorwick Bay we can fossick through the pools as crabs scuttle away and fish dart into the shelter of glossy seaweeds.  There are big caves to explore and you may also see where the Rosa ran aground in 1930 with it's boilers still visible at low tide.

At north bay the lifeboat station holds a century of history, the walls plastered with photos and lists of shipping attended to in distress and we can see the lighthouse as we follow the coastal path.

Tide permitting, we may follow steps down to the beach, a place littered with smooth white stones that have had neat holes carved into them by the sea. From here, it's just a mile stroll to Bridlington, keeping an eye on the incoming tide. We can enjoy a drink in Bridlington, or have a few chips on the beach before returning to Bempton by train.

Dog Owners: Dogs are welcome on the reserve, however they must be kept on leads at all times. This is to ensure that ground nesting birds are not disturbed, and also to ensure the safety of dogs on the cliff top.
